At Triad Electrical Services, we install smart switches, smart dimmers, smart outlets, and the wiring infrastructure they need to work reliably. We’re not a home automation company—we’re electricians who understand the technology.

Smart Switch and Smart Outlet Installation in Cary, NC
You bought a pack of smart switches online, figured it’d be a quick swap, opened the switch box, and found two wires where the instructions say there should be three. Now you’re looking for an electrician. We get it—it’s one of the most common calls we take.
Most smart switches and smart dimmers require a neutral wire to power their Wi-Fi radio and stay connected to your network. Many Cary homes—especially those built before 2010—don’t have a neutral wire in every switch box. That doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. It just means you need a licensed electrician who understands the wiring requirements for smart home devices.

Craig and Matt from Triad Electrical installed an EV charger at my home – it was a phenomenal experience! Both were courteous, punctual, and diligent in helping us to land on the right solution for our home (which ultimately meant a little more work on their part to get things right). I sincerely appreciate how well this went, and would absolutely use Triad Electrical in the future!

Nick and Cody installed a new LED garage ceiling light and it couldn’t have gone better, looks great and perfect lighting for the garage. They arrived as expected and completed the job. The service with Triad Electrical has been fantastic both times they’ve completed projects for us.

Smart Outlet Installation
Wi-Fi Smart Outlets
Smart outlets let you control lamps, fans, and small appliances from your phone or through voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home. We install them in living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices—wherever you want remote control without replacing the lamp or appliance itself.
Smart Outdoor Outlets
Control your landscape lighting, holiday lights, or pool pump from your phone. We install weatherproof smart outlets with proper GFCI protection for outdoor use. Schedule your lights to turn on at sunset and off at midnight without touching a timer.

Smart Switch Installation

Single-Pole Smart Switches
The most straightforward smart switch installation. We verify the neutral wire is present, install the switch, and confirm it connects to your Wi-Fi network and responds to app and voice commands. If no neutral wire exists, we run one—or recommend a no-neutral smart switch model that works in your specific box configuration.
Smart Dimmer Switches
Smart dimmers give you app control, voice control, and scheduling on top of standard dimming. We install them and make sure the dimmer is compatible with your LED bulbs—because just like regular dimmers, smart dimmers need to match the bulb type to avoid flickering. We test the full dimming range before we leave.
Three-Way Smart Switch Setups
Controlling a light from two locations with smart switches is trickier than it sounds. Most smart switch brands require a main smart switch at one location and a companion switch (not a second smart switch) at the other. The wiring between the two boxes has to be reconfigured from a traditional three-way circuit to match the smart switch manufacturer’s diagram. We handle the conversion so both switches work properly with your app and with each other.
Adding a Neutral Wire to Switch Boxes
If your home doesn’t have neutral wires at your switch locations, we can run them. This involves pulling a new conductor from the switch box back to the nearest junction box or receptacle box where a neutral is available. It’s a bit more involved than a simple switch swap, but it gives you full compatibility with any smart switch on the market—now and in the future.
What We Recommend to Customers
Pick an Ecosystem and Stick With It
If your home is built around Alexa, buy Alexa-compatible switches. If you use Apple HomeKit, buy HomeKit switches. Mixing ecosystems creates frustration. We’ll work with whatever platform you’ve chosen—we just want to make sure the wiring supports it.
Start With High-Impact Locations
The biggest quality-of-life upgrade is usually smart switches in the bedroom (turn off lights from bed), the front porch (schedule lights for security), and the living room (dim the lights with your voice). You don’t need to wire the whole house at once.
Don’t Forget the Wi-Fi
Smart switches need a strong Wi-Fi signal at the switch location. If your router is in the basement and you’re installing switches on the second floor, you may need a mesh network or a Wi-Fi extender. We’ll tell you if we think signal strength will be an issue.
Why Hire an Electrician for Smart Switches?
Some smart switches are genuinely a simple DIY swap—if the neutral wire is present and you’re comfortable working with electrical wiring. But if you need a neutral wire added, if you’re converting a three-way circuit, or if you have any uncertainty about what’s in the box, hire a licensed electrician. A mis-wired smart switch can damage the switch, trip your breaker, or create a fire hazard.
We install smart switches every week across Cary, Raleigh, Apex, and Durham. We know which brands work well, which ones have wiring quirks, and how to handle the older wiring configurations common in Triangle-area homes.
